As the 2024-2025 school year approaches, the hectic morning and afternoon school pick-ups and drop-offs are getting closer. “Let's remember to take our time," Bentonville PD Public Information Officer Melissa Fox said. "Everybody's been off for the summer, so traffic's going to be a little bit different.”Fox says parents should always keep an eye on school zones, buses, and crosswalks around schools. “Slow down, especially whenever we're in school zones and if there's a school bus, remember to be vigilant of the red lights," Fox said. “Always assume that there's a kid there, so stop before you get into the crosswalk.”Jessica Holmes lives in Prairie Grove and is very familiar with schools, she has eight children ranging from 3 years old to 21 years old. “There is a lot of traffic and a lot of congestion in the mornings," Holmes said. “There's a lot of kids on bikes, walking, everything.”Back in March of 2024, Holmes' daughter was hit on her bike by a car near Prairie Grove High School on a crosswalk. “It was just an accident of a case where they could not see each other," Holmes said. “You've got to be looking all directions, everybody does, everybody involved.”Going into this school year, Holmes says she is on even more high alert around schools where kids are walking to and from class. “Assume that they're going cross out in front of you," Fox said. "If they're running or walking, just give them plenty of space and make sure you're checking for all of your blind spots as well.”
